The study was conducted in major cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Peshawar. Smokers surveyed generally reported that the financial burden of purchasing cigarettes has become increasingly heavy, leading them to prioritize their consumption towards basic needs such as food and children's education. The report added that over the past seven years, Pakistan had lost as much as 567 billion rupees ($2.04 billion) in potential revenue as multinational tobacco companies lobbied for low-tax policies.
Furthermore, there is evidence that if the government further increases federal excise taxes on the tobacco industry, cigarette sales in Pakistan will decrease further in the coming months.
