According to the latest report from Forbes, e-cigarettes can help quit smoking, even better than paper ones in helping to stop smoking addiction. Results of a trial recently published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine showed that among nearly 1,000 smokers waiting in the emergency rooms of six hospitals in the UK, those who were given e-cigarettes were more likely to successfully quit smoking than those who only received written guidance from a "stop smoking service". E-cigarette recipients had a 76% higher success rate in quitting smoking.

People who were offered free e-cigarettes to the public were more likely to quit smoking than those who received only paper-based information, reports a recent study published in the Journal of Emergency Medicine. A trial of nearly 1,000 smokers in six UK hospital emergency departments found those who received e-cigarettes were 76% more likely to quit smoking.

In addition to providing e-cigarette starter kits, the researchers also provided participants with smoking cessation advice and directed them to local "stop smoking services." As a control group, some received only written advice about local "stop smoking services". The results showed that after six months, nearly a quarter of those who received e-cigarettes said they had quit smoking, compared with 13% of those in the control group.

The results of the study further showed that even people who received e-cigarettes but did not quit smoking were still more likely to try to quit smoking than those in the control group. Their daily cigarette consumption was also lower than when initially exposed. The final smoking cessation rate of both groups was relatively low. Among them, the smoking cessation rate of those who received e-cigarettes was 7.2%, and the smoking cessation rate of the control group was 4.1%. The above data were confirmed by carbon monoxide exhalation testing.

Although e-cigarettes have certain hazards, they are much less harmful than smoking. "We know that e-cigarettes are much less harmful than smoking tobacco and have been shown to help smokers quit smoking," study co-lead Caitlin Notley, a researcher at the University of East Anglia, said in a statement. .”

Ian Pope, another researcher at the University of East Anglia, said: "Smoking killed almost 75,000 people in the UK in 2019 and is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the UK. Switch to electronics Smoking can save thousands of lives." The team believes that if their plan is widely implemented, it could help more than 22,000 people to successfully quit smoking each year.

As well as supporting the use of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool, the trial also demonstrates the potential for intervention in hospital emergency departments. "Emergency departments provide an opportunity to reach people who may not otherwise be motivated to quit smoking, or who may not have the knowledge or resources to access stop smoking services," Pope said. Trial participants mostly live in deprived areas, with more of people are unemployed or unable to work due to illness or disability, so such measures may help many more poor groups.

Lion Shahab, co-director of the Tobacco and Alcohol Research Group at University College London, praised the study, which he said was a way to achieve "brief interventions" that could "easily be integrated into existing health services." The approach could have a positive impact on reducing health inequalities, the researcher, who was not involved in the trial, said in a statement.
