Malaysian e-cigarette quality survey: diacetyl exceeded the standard by 2 times and the heavy metal content complied with the national standard

In order to investigate the quality problems of e-cigarette products in Southeast Asia, 2FIRSTS staff went to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to conduct on-site research and purchased 8 sets of samples. The test results found that there were indeed quality problems in the products.

Special statement:

1. The products involved in this article are samples randomly purchased by 2FIRSTS in the Kuala Lumpur market in Malaysia. The test results only represent the information of the samples;

2. Since it is impossible to determine the authenticity of the product, the description of the sampled products in the article does not represent an evaluation of the relevant brands;

3.2FIRSTS has videotaped and taken photos of the entire process of sample procurement and inspection. If the brand has any questions about the authenticity of the product, please contact 2FIRSTS and we will provide further information to help the brand fight against counterfeiting;

4. The cost of this testing was entirely borne by 2FIRSTS independently, and it did not receive funding from any other third-party company;

5. This article is only used for industrial research and does not promote any products or brands;

6. Minors are not allowed to access.

At the end of 2023, an insider revealed to 2FIRSTS that 2,3-butanedione (hereinafter referred to as butanedione) was added to some milk-flavored e-cigarette products in the Southeast Asian market. As early as 2004, diacetyl has been repeatedly confirmed by many institutions to be closely related to "popcorn lung" (an irreversible lung damage). At the same time, the list of "additives allowed to be used in aerosols" in China's national standard for electronic cigarettes does not include diacetyl.

In order to confirm the authenticity of this statement, 2FIRSTS staff went to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in early December 2023 to conduct on-site research and purchased 8 sets of samples. Due to the failure to find the relevant testing agency in Malaysia, 2FIRSTS sealed the purchased sample number and sent it to a third-party testing company in China.

Since Malaysia currently does not have product standards for e-cigarettes, the evaluation is based on China's "E-cigarette" national standard (hereinafter referred to as the "national standard"). Testing data showed that some of the products submitted for inspection had quality problems. The diacetyl content in one group of products exceeded the national standard limit by nearly twice; the heavy metal arsenic was detected in five groups of products, but their content was far below the national standard limit.
