Huge amount of illegal e-cigarettes, cigarettes and tobacco products seized in UK city of St Harlems as council expresses concern over counterfeit goods
Recently, a large number of illegal e-cigarettes, cigarettes and tobacco products were seized in St Harlens, UK last year.
Disposable e-cigarettes have grown in popularity in recent years, with many local governments raising concerns about counterfeit goods after they were found to contain substances above legal nicotine levels.
As a result, online vaping site Vape Club has submitted freedom of information requests to councils across the UK to find out the number of seizures of e-cigarettes, cigarettes and roll-your-own tobacco products.
The data shows that St. Harlans City Council's trading standards team seized 4,704 e-cigarettes in 2022. This is the first time the number of seizures has been counted; 152 is a substantial increase.
In addition, the city's trading standards team also seized 528 illegal cigarette products in 2022, an increase of nearly 10 times from 48 in 2021.
St Harlens Council said it was committed to fighting illegal vaping and counterfeit goods and recalled more than £30,000 worth of products from a shop in May last year.
People caught selling illegal tobacco products will have their products seized, fined up to £10,000 and may lose their right to buy or sell tobacco products.
In a statement from St Harlens Council, Kate Grucarter MP, Minister for Economic Inclusion, Business and Skills, said:
"Despite the recognition that vaping is a useful tool in helping adults quit smoking, we remain concerned about local businesses selling illicit products, and vaping to youth under the age of 18."
