FDA will decide the fate of the U.S. e-cigarette industry this Thursday

The US Food and Drug Administration is scheduled to decide on Thursday how or whether e-cigarette companies can continue to sell their products.

The agency is currently reviewing millions of pre-market tobacco product applications (or PMTA) from e-cigarette companies.

Basically, these companies need to prove to the FDA that their products are safe enough to continue selling in the United States.

In recent years, due to the growing popularity of e-cigarettes among teenagers and other youth groups, the FDA has been subject to increasing scrutiny by policymakers and public health leaders.

So far, the company has been able to sell and market its products under limited restrictions.

Murray's Elite SMOK Vape is a company that may be affected by the FDA's decision.

The owner, Ryan de la Urta, speculates about what will happen.

Delahuerta said: We will see that our e-liquid is reduced to only a few brands.

He explained that his inventory accounts for 70% of his sales.

De La Huerta also said that this change will strengthen the sales of e-cigarettes through an alternative and shady market.

"You have seen a black market appear on social media to sell these things. This is unregulated, and teenagers can access them there," he said.

At the same time, a medical professional said that he believes this is a step in the right direction.

"This is a good part of a public health strategy because it may limit the number of young people using e-cigarettes." said Sean Callahan, a professor of medicine at the University of Utah.

He added that some adults may be dissatisfied with the results because these smoker products help them quit smoking.

Just last week, CNN reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) blocked the sale of more than 55,000 flavored e-cigarette products.

This is the first time such products have been banned since the PMTA was submitted in September 2020.
