Recently, a number of Swedish public health experts jointly released a report stating that Sweden will reduce the smoking rate to below 5% in the next few months and become the first "smoke-free" country in Europe. Experts point out that the effective implementation of tobacco control policies benefits from emerging nicotine substitutes such as e-cigarettes

A "smoke-free" society means that the smoking rate of a specific group of people is less than 5%. In 2017, the European Union officially proposed to achieve the public health goal of a smoke-free society by 2040. In the recent Stockholm International Symposium, Swedish experts published The Swedish Experience: A roadmap for a smoke-free society report, announcing that Sweden has reached the national goal of being smoke-free.

Dr Anders Milton (former president of the Medical Association), one of the authors of the report detailing Sweden's pioneering strategy to reduce the harmful effects of smoking and save lives, said that if the rest of the EU adopted Sweden's tobacco control strategy, it could save lives in the next 10 years. During the year, more than 30,000 lives were saved. Meanwhile, another author, Dr Delon Human, former secretary-general of World Medicine, said it was far better for smokers to switch from traditional combustible cigarettes to e-cigarettes or nicotine pouches than to continue smoking.

In fact, any nicotine product cannot be completely harmless, but compared with combustible cigarettes, the harm of e-cigarettes is reduced by 95%, which is safer than combustible cigarettes to a certain extent. At the same time, compared with NRT (nicotine replacement therapy), the nicotine transmission efficiency of e-cigarettes is higher and purer. Therefore, as a substitute for reducing the carcinogens of combustible smoke and alleviating nicotine dependence, using electronic cigarettes is a very effective way to quit smoking.

According to Lancet survey data, the number of deaths due to smoking in the world reached 7.7 million in 2019. In addition, medical research has found that smoking has a positive correlation with the induction of cardiovascular disease and lung disease. Therefore, smoking cessation is a necessary means to ensure public health. The emergence of electronic cigarettes not only ensures that smokers can obtain nicotine healthily, but also reduces the social smoking rate and even the harm of second-hand smoke.

The use of e-cigarettes to quit smoking and reduce harm has become the consensus of tobacco control in some countries, and more and more evidence continues to show that e-cigarettes have more advantages in terms of safe smoking cessation. The well-known American publishing house Wiley-Blackwell once published a paper Prospective association between e‐cigarette use frequency patterns and cigarette smoking abstinence among adult cigarette smokers in the United States.

The paper was jointly released by the University of Southern California and Boston University. The paper stated that after a five-year follow-up survey of 5,699 adult smokers, it was found that 560 smokers successfully quit smoking in the continuous use of e-cigarettes. The researchers also found that continuous use of e-cigarettes is positively correlated with the success rate of smoking cessation. After removing the influencing factors of time and choice preference, the final results show that daily use of e-cigarettes is more effective than continuous smoking cessation for 12 months. 4 times higher in probability.

It was Sweden's acceptance of smoke-free products as less harmful alternatives that enabled it to succeed in the promotion of tobacco control strategies. In fact, Sweden's tobacco control strategy has huge benefits. According to relevant data, the total number of cancer deaths in Sweden is 38% lower than that of other European countries, and the incidence of cancer is 41% lower than that of other European countries. It has become the country with the lowest proportion of tobacco-related diseases in the EU.

As one of the new tobacco products, the special taste of e-cigarettes has indeed attracted more users. In the long run, the public and the media should treat e-cigarettes correctly instead of treating them as scourges, which will have a negative impact on the public health of the entire society. more positive impact. Dr Fagerström, the author of the Swedish report, also believes that if other countries reduce the supply and demand of combustible cigarettes as Sweden has done, while enacting different tax rates, providing smokers with financial incentives, and switching from cigarettes to less harmful alternatives such as e-cigarettes, it will great benefit to the world.
