More than 300 illegal e-cigarette products have been removed from shelves in New Zealand and can no longer be legally sold
More than 300 vaping products have been removed from shelves in New Zealand.
New Zealand's Vaping Regulatory Authority (VRA) has inspected more than 8,000 products on store shelves that have been notified of their registration.
"For the majority of the products reviewed, no problems were found, but in some cases, manufacturers or importers provided information indicating that they may contain prohibited ingredients, or that they may contain nicotine salts in excess of the legal limit." VRA Ma Hugh Burgess said.
"Following a review, 340 vaping products have been withdrawn, meaning they can no longer be legally sold in New Zealand. We will publish a list of products that are no longer notifiable on the Ministry of Health website shortly."
As many as 1,800 other vaping products could still be removed from shelves. Authorities are working with companies that make or sell them and are asking for more information from them by next week.
Fair Go began investigating the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to underage customers and showed an unidentified 14-year-old mystery shopper that e-cigarettes could be purchased over the counter.
It has since been investigating confusing e-cigarette labels and the nicotine concentrations of some of them.
Some manufacturers and importers appear to have been selling e-cigarettes containing nicotine salts, which contain up to 80 percent more nicotine than legally allowed.
Proponents of high-intensity e-cigarettes argue they are closer to the smoking experience, which they say is crucial to getting smokers to quit.
Advocates of tighter controls say the vaping here is too potent and addictive, especially for younger vapers who haven't yet smoked.
