Former smoker criticizes Australian nicotine e-cigarette law changes

On October 6th, according to foreign news reports, a business owner in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia is worried that the recent changes to the e-cigarette law may cause former smokers to re-establish this habit.

According to the federal government's changes that took effect on October 1, it is now illegal to obtain nicotine-containing e-cigarette products without a doctor's prescription.

Ryan Hussey owns and operates Launceston's 888 Vapes, which produces nicotine-free e-cigarette liquids.

He is the only e-liquid manufacturer in Tasmania, mainly dealing with online orders and stockists in mainland China and Tasmania.

Like many people in the e-cigarette community, Mr. Hussey disagrees with the rule that those who want to obtain nicotine-containing e-cigarette products must obtain a prescription from a general practitioner.

"I don't think this is the way we are going," Mr. Hussey said. "You can still buy cigarettes anywhere. This is hypocritical. Now everyone needs a prescription. This means that some doctors will sign e-cigarette prescriptions for months to meet demand."

Mr. Hussey moved to Tasmania in 2016. After becoming a heavy smoker who smokes 20 cigarettes a day, he started to be exposed to e-cigarettes.

"When I moved, the person who gave us the furniture was smoking an e-cigarette. I asked him what it was. He told me about e-cigarettes and took me to the e-cigarette store to buy my own e-cigarette. I started smoking e-cigarettes. , I have never touched cigarettes since then. Some other people I know still smoke e-cigarettes, and then smoke two or three cigarettes a day. Some people just quit smoking altogether and start smoking e-cigarettes."

Contrary to Mr. Hussey’s view, Health Minister Jeremy Rockliff said that the government’s position remains firm.

``Based on the advice of health experts, the Tasmanian government's long-term position is that evidence regarding the extent to which personal vaporizers may harm a person's health or whether their use of personal vaporizer products is more effective than other measures is far from certain. It can be used to help quit smoking," said Mr. Rockcliffe.

"We will continue to follow the recommendations of the World Health Organization and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia to develop a regulatory framework.
